Daily Sun (February 21 2014) - On Wednesday, the mutilated bodies of two black teenage girls were found in the veld. Yesterday two black schoolboys were arrested for the murders, described as a Satanic ritual - which is very similar to muti-killings except that no 'traditional healers' were apparently involved.
The cops have dug up animal bones and dangerous weapons at a house not far from the murder scene. Police spokesman Kay Makhubela said: "The inquiry was opened based on suspicion of Satanism and to see if any bodies were buried behind the house."
He said the police K9 unit yesterday dug behind the house and found animal bones believed to be those of a dog, as well as an axe and a dagger.
He made it clear that no body parts or human bones were found. This house, and the house where one of the dead girls lived with her mother, are in the same street in Dobsonville, Soweto.
But so far cops are insisting the two investigations are not linked.
SAPS spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila said the boys were in custody and appeared in Protea Magistrates Court that same day
The boys were arrested while attending class at the George Khosa Secondary School, which Thandeka and Chwaita also attended.
Thandeka and Chwaita will be buried next week.
Daily Sun spoke to Thandeka's guardian, Elizabeth Putsanyane, who said Thandeka had written a letter stating that "she would burn down the family house if she wasn't given more money. She said she would 'rather go to her father's family in KZN'. "She wanted to live by her own rules and I told her that would not happen as long as she lived under my roof," said Elizabeth.
The families of the girls are considering a joint funeral on Tuesday, but that will be decided at meetings held by the elders.
Chwaita's aunt, Noxolo Mphati, said 'the information we got from Chwaita's classmates on Wednesday night is that Chwaita and Thandeka were to be accepted into a Satanic group with markings on their hands made by razor blades," said Noxolo."They said the house in which the dog bones were found is the headquarters, where Satanists have their meetings."
A delegation from the Lutheran Church came to the school to pray for the pupils. "We heard on the news about the terrible thing that happened to the girls and as parents and Christians we must invite God to handle this matter," said gogo (grandmother) Magdeline Sole.
She said they heard about Satanism at the school two years ago. Gauteng Education spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane said the department visited the school yesterday and offered teachers and pupils counselling.
