AfriForum will bring formal charges against Mr. Phumlani Rodney Gumbi, the ANC Councillor for Ward 28 in the Hibiscus Coast Municipality, after he verbally assaulted and threatened Mr. Fred Lauterbach, a farmer in Margate, and an Ugu District Municipality official earlier this morning.
“Mr. Lauterbach and the municipal official both confirmed to me that Councillor Gumbi verbally assaulted and threatened them, when they went to inspect the Ugu Municipality’s water meter that was installed on Mr. Lauterbach property without his permission,” said Chris Fourie, Community Co-ordinator for AfriForum in KwaZulu-Natal.
“The municipal official said that he had never come across such blatant racism in all his time at the municipality. The farmer also confirmed that the Councillor said that they ‘will see what happens to the white people if they touch that house’ (the illegal dwelling on farmer’s property),” Fourie added
AfriForum will assist Mr. Lauterbach to open a criminal charge at the SAPS today and will discuss with their legal team the possibility to take Councillor Gumbi to the Equlity Court. The Ugu Municipal official confirmed that the matter will also be handled internally through the municipality disciplinary channels.

AFriforum: brings criminal charges against Hibiscus Coast councillor: A farmer in the Margate area has approached Afriforum to assist him in a case against illegal squatters on his land, whose shacks are apparently serviced by the Ugu municipality. A local ANC counclllor Mr Phumlani Gumbi, verbally assaulted and threatened the farmer and a municipal official investiging the case. AfriForum brought criminal charges at the SAPS on behalf of the farmer.
