Survived: Donald Bremer, 76 and daughter-in-law Beverley Shepherd March 2 2014 - Donald Bremer (76) has a black eye after the assault, but says he is a die hard. PHOTO: magriet theron Donald Bremer (76) from Gardiner Street in Parow, woke up with a weight on top of him, his arms were held to his sides and then he was pulled from his bed. Bremer, an ex-policeman from Claremont, knows how to defend himself. His daughter-in-law, Beverley Shepherd, who stays in the house, says since the attack, Donald has been forgetful. He was, in fact, struck hard in his face and the perpetrator threatened to kill him. Shepherd woke up when Bremer looked into her room, covered in blood, a stranger standing by his side. The stranger had a microwave oven in his arms. “The man ordered us to open the front door for him. He held some kind of weapon under his shirt with which he treatened us,” she says. Beverley opened the door and in his haste, the burglar dropped the microwave oven. “He told me to bring it to him, and I told him he can do it himself,” she recalls. The man then pulled the microwave through the door by its cord. “The suspect ran away with a stolen microwave in his hand,” says Inspector Kevin Williams, spokesperson for the Parow police. “While he was running down the road, he was met by a Parow police vehicle that was responding to a house breaking in progress in sector two. “The suspect was successfully apprehended and arrested for possession of stolen property and house breaking. He is a 42-year-old male with no fixed address and has appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on 26 March,” Williams says. According to Shepherd, the police arrived in three vans, 10 minutes after they called them, and the thief was caught five minutes later, but by this time he was already wearing other clothes. “At least we got our microwave back, and it is still working, can you believe it,” she says. - TygerBurger http://www.tygerburger.co.za/135236/news-details/attacker-caught-after-family-threatened
