Manfred Kruger (64), popularly known as “the bird man of Bonaero Park”, was shot in the face by intruders at his home on Marignane Drive in Bonaero Park at 6am on Wednesday morning.
According to his employee, Vernon Teixeira, Kruger is in ICU at the Life Glynnwood Hospital in a stable but critical condition.
Teixeira said Kruger was an animal lover and always walked around with his African Grey parrot, which had earned him his nickname.
On the day of the shooting Kruger woke up early to go and feed the birds at the pan across from his home.
“On his way out he switched off the alarm at the front door where he was attacked by two men. They wrestled and Kruger fell to the ground,” explained Teixeira.
This, Teixeira said, was when the suspects shot him in the face while he lay on his front porch. The bullet went through his mouth, through his jaw and into his shoulder.
His jaw was shattered and his damaged spleen was removed on the same day.
Kruger is the owner of Instech Calibration Services, a company that deals with instrumentation and calibration.
According to Teixeira the equipment they use would not be of any use if stolen as only qualified people would be able to operate it.
“I think the intruders wanted money but we don’t even keep cash on site as all transactions are done electronically,” he added.
The suspects fled the scene and nothing noticeable was taken from the property.
Kempton Park SAPS could not give comment.
Kruger does not have a wife or children but has received support from family and friends.
He is apparently using pen and paper to communicate.
