Afrikaner technician Sean Henry Bates, 19, shoots dead black knifeman who attacked him and widowed mom at Pietersburg smallholding: police charges him with murder charge

Maroela Media of the Afriforum publication, Phillip Bruwer writes
19-year-old technician Sean Henry Bates was asleep at the Tweefontein, Pietersburg smallholding he shares with his widowed mom Sandra when he
was attacked by two black knifemen at around 03h00 on Thursday-morning 9 April 2015. The mother and son have lived there for 11 years. They are not rich: the father died of a heart-aneurism four years earlier and they live alone.
The injured Bates said to Maroela Media after the shooting that they suspect that the two black males who attacked them with a knife and a hammer in their beds had lured
their dog from their erf and tied him up outside the gate. The animal must have known the men because he did not raise an alarm.
"They gained access to our house by cutting open the burglar bars at our living room. They went to the kitchen where one grabbed a knife and the other man was armed with a hammer.
The suspects first went to his bedroom - breaking open his door with the hammer. Bates and his mom Sandra both woke up from the noise"I was attacked by both men on my bed. I was lying on my back and tried to kick the two away from me but they grabbed me and held me down.
One held him down while the other one rummaged through his room.
Sandra meanwhile had locked herself inside her bedroom and started screaming loudly, hoping to draw the attention of outsiders.
While the men stormed towards her room Bates managed to get his gun from their legally-registered gunsafe."I was in the hall heading towards my mom's bedroom when one of the men stormed towards me. I fired a warning shot but he still came towards me.
I then shot him once in the chest but this didn't stop him, he kept coming. I fired another shot'."Meanwhile my mother had managed to get the knife away from the other man.
Both men still fought back against him: one dragged his DVD-player from underneath his TV and hit him over the head with it."I fired off another shot and they ran away after climbing through the same window they had got into the house with."That's when the shot man collapsed outside. His comrade tried to help him by dragging him several metres but then left him behind and ran away.
The only items 'robbed' were Bates' laptop, wallet and tablet-computer.
The local Tweefontein Community Policing forum was alerted and shortly after they arrived at the scene the police and paramedics also arrived.
Mr Bates was taken to a nearby hospital and his headwound required 22 stitched, and there were also seven stab-wounds to his elbow.
He is recovering at home. Sandra was scraped and got bruises from being bashed.
A case of murder was opened against Bates. The senior state prosecutor will have to decide whether he 'acted within his legal rights of self-defence'.
SAPS capt. Ntobeng Phala of the Pietersburg police said the dead suspect was 30 years old. He did not publish his name."The police investigate house-robbery and murder. Nobody is under arrest."
