Aug 2003: Janine Drennen had held her crying baby Kayla Rawstone (1) close to her, as the young white SA woman looked at the gamg pf black men who had just raped her. William Kekana (19) then shot her once, injuring her: The young mom screamed and put her baby down on the ground.
Kekana's accomplice turned to the crying baby and shot baby Kayla in the face. It was her first birthday.
The black men present had then fired at her mother Janine Drennen "until she dropped silently on the ground".
One-year-old Kayla was still alive, making rattling sounds. Kekana then shot her and she fell silent.
This is what the 17-year-old black female survivor of this triple-massacre told to the Temba Circuit High Court in Pretoria on July 31 2004.
William Kekana, 20, one of the five young black males who had hijacked and kidnapped the white family admitted everything.
"We did everything we did because they were whites,' he testified. (see detailed testimony below).
The three convicted men were sent to prison for 25 years by the Temba High Court judge.
However, the other two men reportedly also involved in this racist hate-crime have never been arrested. Why not? This case is clearly not closed. The SAPS just seems to think it is. Why aren't the two other men arrested? Surely the SAPS must know who they are? They still have their three comrades in prison.

July 28 2004 By Nalisha Kalideen, The Star: Temba Circuit High court, Pretoria: "This is the face of the devil personified. Cold and stony. Angry eyes. Pursed lips that only open to answer questions that require more than a shake of the head.
This is William Kekana, pathological liar, killer, rapist, coward and kidnapper. And he's only 20.
On Tuesday, Kekana sat impassively in the dock listening to Judge Monica Leeuw's comments before she sentenced him to six life sentences and 60 years in jail for crimes that included murder, abduction and rape. He was, the judge declared, "the real reincarnation of the devil himself - the devil personified".
Judge Leeuw had found Kekana guilty on 14 charges, including the murder of Hester Rawstone, 52, Janine Drennan, 24, and her one-year-old baby Kayla.
He was also convicted in the Temba Circuit Court, north of Pretoria, of the abduction, rape and attempted murder of a 17-year-old girl at Stinkwater, the rape of Drennan, and aggravated robbery. But Kekana does not want to go to jail. Asked why he said: "While in jail, I'm dead."
He will be in prison for a minimum of 25 years, after which he will qualify for parole - but as long as he is considered a danger he will not be released."The judge stated during sentencing that Kekana had been "arrogant and remorseless" throughout his testimony."When he spoke, he served only to tie himself in knots until he could not escape his own contradictions. Occasionally he glowered at the prosecutor, Dewald Reynierse, when he made these contradictions obvious. "I am sorry for this (killing)," Kekana said.
Reynierse said: "I'm not asking if you are sorry but if you would have gone back to killing again (if you had not been caught)."
Kekana said: "I'm saying I wouldn't have gone out killing, because I'm not a killer."
At the start of argument in mitigation and aggravation of sentence, he had admitted his guilt and apologised to the Rawstone family - a confession he seemed not to have considered when he denied he was a killer.
Kekana said in mitigation of sentence: "I committed crimes for money. It was not my intention to kill or rape."
Reynierse asked: "But instead you rape a mother, kill her one-year-old baby, and all that for two rings and a cellphone?"
Then Kekana said he would not answer the questions Reynierse put to him. He later said to Reynierse: "In this case you're a white man, I'm a black man. I forgive you."

ut when asked to explain himself, Kekana said he was "referring to the apartheid era".
Judge Leeuw was also shocked, and interrupted Kekana, asking him to explain himself again.
He (Kekana) then said that Drennan, baby Kayla and Rawstone "had been killed because they where white.""Did you say you killed and raped a white lady and killed her child because of apartheid?" Judge Leeuw asked."Well, after the old lady (Rawstone) answered her cellphone in the car, she was shot. "Thereafter we did everything we did because they were white," Kekana said.
Reynierse asked Kekana why he then had hijacked, raped and attempted to kill a black girl (the only survivor). He said that was "done upfront" and he had not intended it.
Judge Leeuw said: "These arguments, especially the apartheid issue, are a sublime piece of nonsense. It tells me that he has this sense of entitlement. South Africa does not need a young man like the accused. Not now, and not in a long time."
Kekana's father Herbert, a police officer, sat with his head in his hands. He seemed more emotional than his son, who was unmoved as Judge Leeuw characterised him as "selfish, cruel and sadistic".

The Telegraph reporter Jane Flanagan faithfully repeated their claim, calling this vicious hatecrime -- the racist triple-murder of a grandmother, her daughter and her baby-granddaughter -
a 'vengeful killing spree'.
Why didn't she write the truth? Why didn't this journalist refer to this horrific triple-murder as a 'racist hate-crime'?

The police, who describe the murders as the "most gruesome" they have experienced, believe that the gunmen caught Miss Drennen sending the messages, prompting the VENGEFUL KILLING SPREE. "South Africans have grown wearily accustomed to violent crime, but the depravity of last week's attack has focused attention on the South African Government's failure to deal with the crime epidemic."The (SA)Government, which has suppressed the publication of crime statistics for two years, said last week it was satisfied that crime levels were "stabilising" - a claim met with disbelief by lawyers in South Africa who say that only one in 10 violent criminals is brought to court because of poor policing methods."Ms Drennen, her daughter Kayla Rawstone and her future mother-in-law, Hester Rawstone, were on their way to celebrate the baby's first birthday in a suburb of the capital, Pretoria, when they were ambushed and abducted by the heavily armed gang. "According to a witness in the car - a teenage girl whom the gang had also abducted - they forced Miss Drennen to watch as her daughter was shot in the back of the head and Mrs Rawstone, 52, in the neck. Miss Drennen was then shot dead and her body dumped in a field."
More than 20,000 cars are hijacked in South Africa each year, often at gunpoint, but few attacks end in such extreme violence. Last week's incident prompted 8000 people on one day alone to email the Justice Department, calling for the death penalty.
KILLINGS OUT OF LUST AND HATRED, SAID THE SAPS
The police say the gunmen took their three victims on a terrifying trip to a rural town north of Pretoria. On the way, they also abducted the girl, 16, who was walking home and has helped police reconstruct events.
"It looks as though the killings were committed out of lust and hatred," said one detective.
According to Captain Piletji Sebola, Miss Drennen and the teenager were repeatedly raped and beaten. The girl was also shot in the mouth, but survived and managed to crawl away to find help. A police patrol found the hijacked car about 2.5 kilometres from where the killings occurred. A revolver, believed to be the murder weapon, was found inside.
Five men in their 20s have been arrested on suspicion of committing the rapes and murders.
Three of them appeared in court last week. Such speedy arrests are rare in South Africa. The other two are still at large
Although the Government refuses to release crime statistics, research commissioned by the country's Law Commission shows that only one in 10 violent crimes results in a conviction.
Ron Paschke, the barrister who carried out the research, tracked the progress made since 1998 by police officers in 15,000 cases of murder, fraud, rape and robbery with aggravating circumstances."Violent criminals get away with their crimes," he said. "For every 100 violent crimes reported to police, convictions were recorded in only six cases."
