Cullinan smallholder Derek 'Das' Venter 44, shot dead by four black SA males who spoke Afrikaans and Tshwana. Murdered Cullinan smallholder Derek 'Das" Venter, 45, an ex-wrestler and engineer of Aurecon in Pretoria, fought to his death to protect his wife and three children against four black attackers.
Before he died in a hail of bullets, Das Venter first untied his trussed-up wife's feet. Two handgun, a pistol and a revolver, very likely stolen in a previous raid, were used by the Tswana-speaking black South African males to fire four bullets into Venter's body: one through the throat, three into the upper torso.
SAPS captain Johannes Jaftha said Venter had responded to noises on the first-floor of their double-storey house at the Welgedacht smallholdings.
When he came downstairs he noticed the sliding doors were open. "He saw one attacker through the window and the other three were storming towards him through the door,' Jaftha described the scene."They overpowered him. Venter, who used to be a wrestler in his younger years, tried to fend off one and was shot - it is suspected that the same pistol and revolver were used which the gang used in a previous attack.
Family spokesman Natie Verwey said the attackers locked up Venter's three children - 3, 7 and 10 - in a bedroom while demanding money from Mrs Annarie Venter.
She only had R200 on her 'so they beat her up. '
Neighbour André van Heerden, Cullinan CPF member and a neighbour, heard the shots being fired and phoned Venter and then drove over.
The attackers hid behind the homestead as he drove up and ran away when he was near the house.
The men had only taken the cellphones and some money. Venter still was untying his wife's feet after he was shot and alrady fatally injured -- and then he died.

It was also communicated to the community that 'The Police Are Too Tired to Patrol'.
