Couple Killed By AK47 Wielding Suspects, Tongaat, KwaZulu Natal: A couple were killed after they drove into a 'cash in transit robbery' in progress at a business in Noodsberg Road, Tongaat.
The female occupant was an employee of the business and was being dropped of at work by her husband. When the couple noticed the robbery they turned their vehicle and attempted to flee the scene. The suspects opened fire with AK47 rifles and other high caliber weapons on the fleeing Toyota Hilux bakkie striking the female in her head and the driver in his leg. The driver drove a few kilometers from the business when he lost control of his vehicle and landed in a banana plantation. The driver of the vehicle called Reaction Unit South Africa -- begging for help -- stating that his wife was dead and he had been shot. The caller could not provide his exact location. The RUSA helicopter took off in search of the scene which was located in Upper Tongaat. Paramedics were on scene and attempted to save the victim who had succumb to his injury's and died at the scene. The female occupant was lying in the bakkie and died of a gun shot wound to the head. Witnesses to the robbery stated that the suspects were seen using bullet proof vests and caps with the police insignia on it. The suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a white Toyota RUN X. The suspects' vehicle was recovered in the Cottonlands area by members of the SAPS. A cap with SAPS insignia was found in the vehicle. Officers on scene requested that the RUSA helicopter flying over the area and assist with the search for the suspects. Residents in the area noticed two Black males abandoning the vehicle and wrapping and AK47 rifle in newspaper before fleeing into a bushy area. The RUSA helicopter, members of the SAPS and Reaction Officers conducted an extensive search of the area however no arrests were made.
