13 May 2014. CCTV footage has caught the moment a man was shot twice during a hijacking in Alberton on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred around 7.30pm in South Crest, Alberton.
Owner of Special Operations Group (SOG) security services Du Toit Lambrechts said the occupant of the white Volkswagen Polo was reversing out of the driveway when the black vehicle with the hijackers cut him off. In the footage the driver is seen hastily driving back into his yard.
Two of the hijackers jumped out of the vehicle and approached the polo on either side, shooting the occupant twice.
“He was shot twice, once from the hijacker on the driver’s side and one from the hijacker on the passenger side. The victim was shot in the left arm, right arm and also had a chest wound,” said Lambrechts.
After removing the wounded man from the car, the suspects jumped into the vehicle and fled the scene.
SOG was alerted to the incident by a client who heard the shots.
When they arrived on scene the Alberton Community Policing Forum was there assisting the wounded victim who was stabilised and rushed to hospital.
“We understand that he is in a stable condition and that the gunshots wounds were not life threatening,” said Lambrechts.
SOG claim that 90 minutes after the shooting, police recovered the vehicle in Katlehong. Alberton police however said the vehicle has not yet been recovered, but confirmed no arrests have been made. Police also did not rule out the possibility that this may be part of a syndicate.
Last month, two videos were released that appeared to show a hijacking syndicate at work in Johannesburg. Both hijackings o followed the same modus operandi: cutting vehicles off and firing gunshots.
