Asbestosis sufferer William Engelbrecht 61, died of oxygen-shortage after Eskom cut the power for a second time on Thursday at his home in Navalsig, Bloemfontein
Engelbrecht suffered from severe asbestosis and his family believed he had not recovered from the first power cut when he died during the second one.
The family's generator was switched on but it was not strong enough to keep his two oxygen machines going.
His sister Lina Herbst said he was permanently connected to two oxygen machines because one was not strong enough.
Eskom implemented power cuts on Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, and again from 6pm to 8.30pm.
The family's generator was switched on but it was not strong enough to keep two oxygen machines going."It could only keep my brother going for short periods of time, if the electricity was not off for long," she told Beeld."It was too much for my brother who had not recovered from the first power failure."

6 February- Footage uploaded on Facebook shows a Home Affairs official in Durban physically assaulting a woman who was queuing for her marriage certificate.
The video was uploaded by Tanith Molliere who says she was assaulted by the Home Affairs staffer when Home Affairs staff chose to close their operation at 15h00 instead of the specified 16h30.
Tanith and a group of people requiring Home Affairs services approached the official, asking to speak to the supervisor. Watch.

"OK - so when I commented in my previous post about there never being a dull moment in Africa (but I love it), I didn't think it would prove itself quite like this!
So - had to visit Umgeni Road Home Affairs (4 Feb 2015) today to pick up a copy of our marriage certificate.
Please keep in mind that this office is a government department and its staff are civil servants. They are meant to serve the public (not the other way round).
Anyway, the published office hours (at the branch itself) for Wednesdays are 08:30 - 16:30. I joined the queue at Umgeni Home Affairs at 14:00. The queue was out the door - sun was beating down. It was sweltering. After speaking to some of the other folk in the queue (some with the teeniest babies & some elderly), it turned out that many of them had been queuing since 08:00 only to be turned away 10:00 (as the office closed due to load shedding between 10:00 and 12:00) and had rejoined the queue that afternoon.
At around 14:45 (while still in the queue outside which had not moved much) we noticed that the security guard had chained the door closed from the inside. When the public started knocking at the door asking what was going on, the security guard ignored us. Then some people started knocking in earnest and then the security guard (from at least 5m away from the door) motioned that the offices were closed. Bear in mind the office hours are 08:30 to 16:30 and they had already been non-operational for around 2 hours during load shedding, and there had been no announcement made or reason given to those queued outside as to why they were closing early.
At around 15:00, I and a few other people then made out way to an entrance a little further along which was manned by 2 security guards and demanded to speak to a supervisor. Finally at around 15:30, a staff member (a Ms Z C Dlamini) came out to tell us that the office were closed and that we were to move to the main door (where we had come from) as a manager would be addressing us. I (being very suspicious of the whole thing) was filming her announcement. She was not very impressed and tried to knock my phone out of my hand and then forced the gate to the entrance closed.
We moved to the main entrance as instructed and waited. Of course no manager arrived, but instead staff members started pouring out of the building to go home. Including Ms Dlamini, who made her way to her car parked near us (this was around 15:45). Two very frustrated gentlemen approached her with questions, and I too approached her (filming the entire time) asking where the manager was that she had advised us would be speaking to us (who never materialised by the way - I stuck around until after 16:00 to be sure).

Survived, fighting for his life: Brian Flanagan shot in the back by a beggar in Sodwana Bay
Cape Town man Brian Flanagan fighting for his life after he was shot in the back in Sodwana Bay KZN by a beggar
http://zululandobserver.co.za/57977/nightmare-holiday-leaves-man-fighting-for-his-life/
Report by: TAMLYN JOLLY 28 January 2015 -
"A CAPE Town family’s holiday turned into a nightmare when they became victims of an armed robbery near Sodwana Bay.
Brian Flanagan was shot in the back after he was accosted by a man begging for money last Friday.
Brian, his wife, June and their son Andrew had spent the day at Mabibi Beach and were returning to their accommodation just before 5pm, via a rural track between Lake Sibaya and Sodwana when tragedy struck.
‘Branches blocked the road and we stopped to clear the way. My dad exited the vehicle to move the branches and we were approached by a man asking for money.
‘We refused and the man pulled out a gun and shot my dad in the back as he was getting back into the vehicle,’ said Andrew who was driving the car.
During the confusion, and Andrew’s attempts to pull Brian into the car, they drove off the road, stopping in the bush.
The gun-wielding man approached them again and demanded money at gunpoint. The family relented and handed over R4 000 before the criminal fled the scene.
Time was of the essence but inadequate clinic facilities at Mbazwana saw the family rush Brian to Mseleni Hospital where he was stabilised before being transported to Life Empangeni Garden Clinic.
At 4.30am on Saturday, almost 12 hours after he was shot, Brian underwent surgery, with another operation on Monday afternoon. He remains in a critical condition.
Mbazwana SAPS has opened a case of armed robbery and, from the victims’ description of their attacker, confirmed he is responsible for other crimes in the area.
While no arrests have been made, police officers are following leads and urge community members to assist in the identity and whereabouts of the attacker.
According to Andrew Zaloumis, iSimangaliso Wetland Park CEO, Sodwana Bay is part of the proclaimed park and is without residents.
Although it is commonly called Sodwana Bay, the town in which people live is Qongwana, an extension of Mbazwana.
‘The shooting happened in Thungwini, not Sodwana,’ said Zaloumis. He confirmed the shooting was reported to the iSimangaliso emergency line and park rangers were dispatched to the scene. Footprints were tracked to a nearby shebeen where they were lost.
‘iSimangaliso condemns this wanton crime which will have a negative impact on the region,’ said Zaloumis.

survived Johan du Toit two other passengers, including a college student, were robbed aboard the Metrorail train .
‘He put a knife in my face’
February 6 2015 at 02:57pm
By Kieran Legg
Cape Town - Metrorail’s trains have been hit by another daylight robbery this week, with passengers threatened at knifepoint.
The railway company is meeting with police to figure out how best to tackle the wave of terror that has been sweeping across its tracks as criminals target passengers, stabbing or using a stun gun on those who fight back.
Johan du Toit was travelling from Cape Town to Newlands on Wednesday at about 7.40am. At Cape Town station, with stories fresh in his mind of the most recent attacks, in which a gang of men boarded a southern line train armed with stun guns and knives, he had noticed a few men behaving suspiciously on the platform.
“But I thought, hey, it’s peak time – I should be safe.”
However, when the train passed Woodstock station, three men in the near-empty carriage pulled “long knives” from their backpacks and began threatening commuters. “He put a knife in my face and said to give him my phone.”
Du Toit had been texting on his Samsung Galaxy S4. He handed it over.
Last month, when Jacques Sasman stood up to two robbers who boarded a train just outside Woodstock station, he was stabbed six times. His wrist was almost severed by a blow aimed at his chest.
Du Toit said two other passengers, including a college student, were robbed.
“Where is the security?” he said after the attack. “I’m okay, shaken, but okay… I find myself thinking, how can this happen during peak time?”
He had lodged a complaint with Metrorail. It was the first time he had been robbed since he began taking the train to work in October.
Spokeswoman Riana Scott confirmed that the incident had been reported to Metrorail. “Regrettably there has been another incident recorded.”
Over the festive season, commuters were targeted by robbers just outside the Woodstock station several times. There were 52 incidents aboard Metrorail trains during December and last month.
Over the past two weeks, another eight arrests have been made and Metrorail has encouraged commuters to report all incidents and any suspicious behaviour to police.
Scott said Metrorail would meet police by on Friday, and the most recent incident would be at the top of their agenda.
Maya Moodley, a passenger aboard the Metrorail train that was terrorised by a gang of men wielding knives and stun guns last month, said Metrorail had improved security on her line.
“It has been noted that security is undoubtedly required as their presence is of definite value to the commuters in the trains on this particular line.”

Government fraud: Trade in bodies to undertakers from Baragwanath Hospital and other hospital mortuaries exposed
Trade in bodies to undertakers from Baragwanath Hospital and other hospital mortuaries exposed
Jack Bloom 06 February 2015 DA MPL welcomes investigation, says there have been similar allegations at other hospital mortuaries"I welcome the investigation by the Gauteng Health Department into allegations about a syndicate at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital mortuary that provides tip-offs to private undertakers when patients die.
This trade in dead bodies is a horrifying practice that must be stamped out. My concern is that this is not the first time that mortuary staff have been implicated in this practice.
It was reported in August 2012 that the department was investigating mortuary officials who sold dead bodies to unregistered funeral undertakers.
There have been similar allegations at other hospital mortuaries, including at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital.
The dead should always be handled with utmost respect. I will be questioning the department why it has been so ineffectual in ensuring that high ethical standards prevail at hospital mortuaries.

3 murders and a suicide: Afrikaans coloured community in Bredasdorp wracked by cruel torture-murders of children
Afrikaans coloured community in Bredasdorp targets of cruel torture-murders
3 murders: Kayde Williams 5, Anene Booysen 16 & her father Klasie Speelman.
Found hanged: Suspected killer-rapist Nicolaas Jacobus van Edon 45
February 8 2015 By Caryn Dolley Weekend Argus

Cape Town - Five-year-old murder victim Kayde Williams has been buried just 50m from where her suspected killer hanged himself.
And a few metres away is the grave of Anene Booysen, the teenager who was raped, disembowelled and left for dead in the Overberg town two years before Kayde’s body was found.
The cemetery where these girls are buried tells a story of how even a small town has not been left untainted by the country’s crime scourge.
The grave of Klaasie Speelman, Booysen’s father, is close by, too. He was stabbed to death last year.
Kayde was last seen on Sunday walking from her mother’s home to her grandmother’s nearby house. Her body was found covered in twigs on a nearby field on Monday –
the same day Nicolaas Jacobus van Edon, 45, was last seen before being discovered dead late on Friday.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut on Saturday confirmed Van Edon’s possible role in Kayde’s rape and murder was being investigated.
On Saturday residents still reeling from shock gathered outside the little girl’s home for a service.
When a white coffin covered with white and lavender flowers was carried out of her home, her mother, Estine Williams, 21, clutched a photograph of her little girl and wept.
A bigger ceremony which hundreds of residents attended was held for Kayde at a nearby school hall.
When Kayde’s classmates sang a hymn during the service, residents started to cry.
Lucy Bell, who had been Booysen’s primary school teacher, said Kayde’s murder had rattled the town just as residents had managed to move on from Anene’s murder.
“Wounds have been reopened. Two years of hurt have been brought back,” she said.
A short video clip of Kayde singing a hymn was then shown and residents again started weeping.
The funeral procession then moved to the cemetery.
Kayde’s classmates, each holding a flower, lined the path as her coffin was carried to the grave site. They threw the flowers into her grave, some sobbing as they did so.
As mourners left the funeral they walked past Booysen’s grave and paused there briefly.
Others walked to the tree where Van Edon had been found hanged, and shook their heads, saying he probably held the answers about what had happened to Kayde.
Hours before Kayde’s funeral started on Saturday, a resident who worked at the graveyard told Weekend Argus he had driven through the area around 7pm on Friday.
He had not noticed anything unusual or seen Van Edon’s body. But the resident said 20 minutes after arriving home, the body was discovered hanging from a tree.
He said his daughter, a policewoman, had worked on the Booysen case and had been so traumatised at the time she had taken six months off work.
“This is an awful thing that’s happening here,” he said.
On Friday, hours before Van Edon’s body was found, Bredasdorp resident Annelize Oosthuizen, 47, told Weekend Argus that her daughter, 17, had seen him near the spot Kayde’s body was found shortly after it was discovered.
Her daughter said he had been crying and said: “I don’t understand how someone can do this to a child.”
Oosthuizen said it felt as if the town was cursed. Weekend Argus

3 murders: Massacre of Afrikaner family: Martin van Breda 54, wife Theresa 54, son Rudi 22 murdered; children Marli 16 and Henri 20 INJURED Stellenbosch estate
Henri van Breda, speaks about triple-axe murder on his family by unknown attacker: Rapport newspaper launches demonisation campaign against Afrikaans teen in a 'trial by news media'.
Afrikaans newspapers and police launched propaganda campaign to implicate Afrikaner youth Henri van Breda in the triple-murders of the van Breda family:
In fact Rapport newspaper is doing a 'trial by media', describing claims by neighbouring children and studying satellite pictures of the estate to establish how far away the houses are from one another - and then interviewing
sound-experts to establish how much the children next door may or may not have been able to hear...
“ "Until his sister Marli van Breda, 16, has completely recovered so that she can tell what happened, the police have to ' rely ' on
the version of events as told by the surviving son Henri van Breda, 16, writes Beeld Afrikaans daily about the triple murder-tragedy which has struck the Van Breda family in Stellenbosch.
Marli van Breda is recovering from her coma and now can reply to questions such as 'who are you' and 'what year is it', a source 'close to the family' is being quoted in Rapport
Afrikaans daily. She suffered serious injuries to her head when someone murdered her father Martin 54, mother Teresa 55, and brother Rudi 22, with an axe on 31 January 2015 at their Stellenbosch complex.
Family spokesman Ben Rootman confirmed to Rapport that Advocate Pieter Botha was approached by the family - he also also represented the UK businessman Shrien Dewani who was discharged by the court when he was charged with murdering his young wife Anni on their honeymoon in Cape Town.
Advocate Botha was approached for the legal team representing one of the two surviving children, Henri 20: as 'the family considers it wise under the circumstances to put together a legal team of experts'.
Henri told the police that he was in the bathroom of the millionaire-family's home at De Zalze, Stellenbosch.
He described how an unknown attacker hacked to death his brother Rudi, 22 'with tremendous strength with an axe'.
Henri reportedly told the police that his father Martin then rushed to Rudi's side, trying to help him - and that Martin then was murdered.
Then Teresa, the mother, was murdered and after that, Marli was attacked. Henri said he was knocked out cold and the attacker 'threw the axe at him'.
Henri came to a while later and contacted the police on his cellphone. The police now is 'examining' the memory of this cellphone.
Apparently they aren't interested in trying to find the attacker.
The police said Henri 's cellphone showed that he was on the internet with his phone twice before he reached them - he told them that the teen was looking for the emergency numbers.
The police accuse the traumatised youth of having been 'hardnosed' when he was questioned as a witness, and that he was confused about the dates.
When he spoke about his sister, he burst into tears. Neighbours claim - according to Rootman - that the police believe that all the victims were murdered and injured on 26 January - a monday night, but that Henri only contacted the emergency services at 07h33, on 27 January, the next morning.
Neighbours reported having heard a 'huge rumour' on the night of the 26th at the Van Breda home.
The children of the neighbours have a room closest to the Van Breda home. They woke up around 03h30 am.
No other neighbours came forward. The distances between the houses are in some places as close as five metres from each other in the estate.
A forensic sound-expert who visited De Zalze estate from Johannesburg, but who was not named, noted that the houses on De Zalze estate have 'very thick, soundproofed walls'. "When the windows and doors are closed, one cannot hear things with any certainty. If you are a light sleeper anything can wake you up, but if you are sleeping deeply, even screaming wouldn't wake you up'.
'Friends' of the family, again unnamed, were quoted about rows in the Van Breda household at 12 Goske Street, wrote Rapport.
Henri suffered from insomnia and his mother had to take him to 'a nurse across the road'.
Henri had been caught smoking marijuana and the teen's graduate-studies were suspended at Melbourne University, Rapport writes.
They quoted a spokesman at the university named as David Scott -ás saying that 'due to 'regulations about privacy we cannot comment on such rumours'.
Rootman said they didn't know anything about such marijuana claims nor the insomnia.
Rapport is hammering this kid: last week they reported that he'd had a brainscan at the Royal Melbourne hospital in Australia but the results were 'negative'.
Rapport quot ed from the 'Western Australian' newspaper which wrote that Henri had to suspend his studies because doctors discovered a growth in his brain'.
He went to live with his parents in South africa 'while undergoing medical treatment'. Rapport quoted the claim without verifying the information.
They also claim that 'the police's forensic team was informed about a possible brain-tumour which was examined'...
Rapport went searching for the youth on Thursday when the Van Breda family members were memorized at the Dutch Reformed Church in Pretoria.
They couldn't find him but his uncle André van Breda told Rapport that the youth definitely attended the service.
"We want to keep him out of the public eye and both sides of the family fully support him', Van Breda reportedly told Rapport."We promised him we would not drop him', they concluded the story.

They are 'investigating a case of murder,' he said in a carefully worded statement. "Nobody was arrested and we are not as yet in a position to speculate

Lost prison memoirs revealed that Nelson Mandela started the Armed Struggle in 1953 and lied about his Communist Party membership
SouthAfrica: Lost prison manuscripts reveal that Nelson Mandela started the 'armed struggle' in 1953... "Revealing the Real Mandela"- The Spectator: 18 Jan 2014: Rian Malan: "This is a story about Nelson Mandela, and it begins on Robben Island in 1974. Prisoner number 466/64 is writing up his life story, working all night and sleeping all day. Finished pages go to trusted comrades who write comments and queries in the margins. The text is then passed to one Laloo Chiba, who transcribes it in ‘microscopic’ letters on to sheets of paper which are later inserted into the binding of notebooks and carried off the island by Mac Maharaj when he is released in 1976.
Outside, the intrepid Mac turns the microscopic text into a typescript and sends it to London, where it becomes the Higgs boson of literary properties, known to exist but not seen since it passed into the hands of the South African Communist Party, or SACP, in 1977. Years pass; the mystery deepens. Mandela goes from being an obscure South African prisoner to possibly the most famous living human, subject of global adulation and a ghostwritten autobiography that sells 15 million. His cult is such that prints of his hands are sold for thousands, and yet the prison manuscript stays missing. Until last week, when Professor Stephen Ellis of the University of Leiden sent out an email saying: ‘You’ll never guess what I’ve just found in the online archive of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.’
So yes, the lost manuscript has come back to us and, with it, a range of fascinating questions. Why was it not published earlier? Why did it surface now?
And above all, what light does it shed on Mandela’s Awkward Secret, first reported by Professor Ellis in 2011?
Everyone thought Mandela was a known entity, but he turns out to have led a double life, at least for a time.
By day, he was or pretended to be a moderate democrat, fighting to free his people in the name of values all humans held sacred.
But by night he donned the cloak and dagger and became a leader of a fanatical sect known for its attachment to the totalitarian Soviet ideal.
When Ellis first aired this theory, it read like a Cold War thriller, but when Mandela died last month, the African National Congress and the SACP both issued statements confirming that it was true: at the time of his arrest in 1962, Nelson Mandela was a member of the SACP’s innermost central committee.
This, then, is why Ellis and I were dizzy with excitement when the prison manuscript turned up last week: here was a rich new source of virgin material to be scanned for the smoking gun, the inside and untold story of Mandela’s secret life as a communist plotter. Alas, the smoking gun was not there. But the prison manuscript does offer insights into the manner in which Mandela’s image has been manipulated over the decades.
It is common cause that the ANC decided in the 1960s to use Mandela as the anti-apartheid movement’s official poster boy. He was the obvious choice, a tall, clean-limbed tribal prince, luminously charismatic, married to the telegenic Winnie, and reduced by cruel circumstance to living martyrdom on a prison island. All you had to do was cleanse him of the communist taint and Bob’s your uncle: four decades down the road, you have the president of the USA getting weepy as he describes Mandela’s lifelong struggle for ‘your freedom, your democracy’. There’s no accounting for taste, but one wonders if Barack Obama would have said that if he’d known his hero batted for the opposition during the Cold War.
‘I hate all forms of imperialism, and I consider the US brand to be the most loathsome and contemptible.’
‘To a nationalist fighting oppression, dialectical materialism is like a rifle, bomb or missile. Once I understood the principle of dialectical materialism, I embraced it without hesitation.’
‘Unquestionably, my sympathies lay with Cuba [during the 1962 missile crisis]. The ability of a small state to defend its independence demonstrates in no uncertain terms the superiority of socialism over capitalism.’
-- Whoa! That’s not Mandela, is it?
Well, yes. These quotes come from the prison manuscript, which turns out to be the first draft of Long Walk to Freedom, Mandela’s famous 1994 autobiography. Much of the first draft is carried forth into the finished book, but these problematic quotes have vanished, along with several other outbreaks of what can only be described as pro-communist harangue. What happened?
Our search for an answer must begin with Rick Stengel, a New York journalist who is now President Obama’s undersecretary for public diplomacy. In the 1980s, Stengel did a tour of duty in South Africa, where he exhibited sensitivity to the hardships of black people and enthusiasm for their ANC liberators, surely one of the factors that led to his eventual appointment as Mandela’s ghostwriter.
Among the raw materials he was given to work with was the prison manuscript, a sprawling 637-page affair with many uneven passages and no clear ending. Stengel proceeded to turn this sow’s ear into Long Walk to Freedom, a blockbuster that considerably boosted the Mandela legend and formed the basis for a movie of the same title, now doing boffo box office around the planet.
In what follows, there is an element of conjecture. Since Mr Stengel is the ghostwriter of record, it seems logical to infer that he made the changes, even if we have no other basis for saying so. Pending clarification, let’s note that Stengel was a New York liberal who would instantly have realised that stridency was undesirable, especially if it sounded a bit Russian. Clearly those lines about the Cuban missile crisis and the evils of Yankee imperialism had to go. Beyond that, the changes are usually quite subtle — a quote dropped here, a shift in emphasis there. Having read both manuscripts several times, I think it’s fair to say that Stengel appears to have cleaned up Mandela’s act in three critical areas.
He plotted war since 1953 -- long before Sharpeville:
-- --- The first was his premature conversion to violence. Officially, Mandela was a 'moderate black nationalist', clinging to hope of peaceful change "until it was extinguished by the Sharpeville 'massacre' of 1960.
But in the prison memoir we find him plotting war as early as 1953, when he sent a comrade on a secret mission to beg guns and money from Red China, in flagrant violation of the ANC’s non-aligned and non-violent stance.
‘I was bitter and felt ever more strongly that SA whites need another Isandlwana,’ he explains. Driving around the country, Mandela constantly imagines rural landscapes as battlefields and cities as places where one day soon ‘the sweet air will smell of gunfire, elegant buildings will crash down and streets will be splashed with blood’. These vivid quotes did not make it into the bestseller.
The second area is his endorsement of force against opponents. In April 1958, the ANC called a three-day national strike which drew little or no support and had to be called off in humiliating circumstances. In Long Walk, Mandela notes that the strike was completely effective in towns where it was enforced by violence or pickets. ‘I have always resisted such methods,’ he says, but goes on to reason that coercion is acceptable in cases where a dissident minority is blocking a majority. ‘A minority should not be able to frustrate the will of the majority,’ he concludes.
But in the prison manuscript, he says the opposite. ‘This is not a question of principle or wishful thinking,’ he says. ‘If force will advance [the struggle], then it must be used whether or not the majority agrees with us.’ Pardon my italics, but it’s important to understand what you’re looking at here: the rewrite makes Mandela sound reasonable. The original is Stalinism. Who determines the course of struggle? It is the communist vanguard, imbued with higher wisdoms derived from the gospel of dialectical materialism. And if the majority talks back, they must be smashed. As they were in the final bloody phase of the struggle here. And everywhere else in Planet Soviet.
The third area of amendment involved errors of even-handedness. I thought I knew South African history, but one section of the prison manuscript surprised me. (The section beginning on page 304, if you must know. The entire book is available at http://specc.ie/longwalkms). I’d heard of the Alexandra bus boycott of 1957, in which a determined display of people power forced capitalists to withdraw a fare increase. But I was totally ignorant of ANC-led boycotts against Langeberg, a giant food-canning operation, and United Tobacco; both corporations were forced to deal with African unions and grant wage increases.
Emboldened, the ANC tackled "cruel potato farmers", and brought them down too. Soon it was organising consumer boycotts all over the country, and often winning. At the same time, it was behind the ceaseless protests against the pass laws for women while winning stunning victories in the Treason Trial and elsewhere. The cost in ANC lives: zero. ‘To the best of my knowledge,’ writes Mandela, ‘no individuals [meaning political detainees] were isolated, forced to give information, beaten up, tortured, crippled or killed’ prior to December 1961, when the communists started their bombing campaign (see page 302).
Clearly, this could not be allowed to stand. It spoils the plot completely! So Stengel cut it, allowing Long Walk to soar towards to its moral epiphany. Provoked beyond endurance by oppression, Mandela convinces the ANC’s timid old guard that it is time to fight back. With their blessing, he goes on to form MK, ‘military wing of the ANC’, which launches a bombing campaign against non-human targets.
If we are to believe Stephen Ellis and Irina Filatova, a Russian historian who has also published on the subject, all of this is doubtful or fabricated. The decision to go to war was actually taken by the Communist party, meeting in a prosperous white suburb, in a marquee where black Africans were outnumbered around two to one by white and Indian intellectuals. ANC president Albert Luthuli did not endorse the move to violence and MK was not the military wing of the ANC at all — it was the sole creation of the Communist party, and everyone involved in its high command was openly or secretly a communist.
You will find nothing of this in Long Walk, of course. Is that Stengel’s fault? I think not. Mandela’s secret was still a secret in the early 1990s, and Stengel was a hired hand, taking instructions from God knows who. I attempted to elicit a comment, but Mr Stengel failed to get back to me. Another man who might be able to shed light on the mystery is Mac Maharaj, the man who smuggled the original out of prison, now a spokesman and adviser in the office of President Zuma. But he didn’t return my calls either.
We will therefore have to turn to Hollywood to complete this story. I went to see the movie version of Long Walk to Freedom armed with a pen and ready to fight yet another rearguard action for Afrikaner honour, only to find myself disarmed by the director Justin Chadwick’s take on the Mandela story. No one really expects movies to be true, and this one certainly isn’t. It’s a fable about a brave man who sticks up for what he believes in and, against all odds, wins in the end. Music swells, titles roll and I must hide the fact that I am moved. (Yes, I am a sucker.)
Then I borrow an electronic copy of the script and run a search for the word ‘communist’.
-- Two scenes come up.
(a) In one, a white policeman jostles Mandela while saying, ‘Ag, everyone knows you’re a bloody communist!’
(b) In another, a white police general appears at the scene of a bombing and says, ‘This is the work of communist terrorists….’
Both cops are clearly intended to be taken as "racist buffoons". This is a perfect distillation of the traditional left-liberal position on Mandela.
For decades it was gospel. Now, it’s inadvertently funny.

Found guilty: three black males who shot dead South African and WBO 2003 heavyweight boxer Corrie Sanders, 42
Murdered South African boxing-legend Corrie Sanders's mom Alida broke into tears at the Pretoria High Court after three black males were found guilty of murdering him on 22 September 2012 while he was celebrating his 21-year-old brother Mike's birthday in a Brits, North West restaurant. A gang arrived with guns blazing at the boma just after the family had said their prayers before starting the dinner. Sanders was 42 years old. He died in hospital the next day.
Judge Ferdi Preller ruled that Paida Fish, Chris Moyo and Samuel Mabena were guilty of Sanders' murder, armed robbery with extinuating circumstances, and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Preller noted in his summary that Moyo was arrested with the handbags of two women who were at the restaurant, the mesdames Snyman and Powell, in his possession. Mabena was arrested with Mrs Powell's ostrich-leader wallet with R500 cash and Mike Sanders' father in law Hiram Kendall's engraved watch. And Fish was arrested with the Kendall couple's Range Rover key in his underpants and with Alida's black handbag. Preller said that the identity parade when Fish and Moyo were pointed out by two witnesses was 'significant' when linked with the stolen items which had been found in their possession. "Mabene could not provide a satisfying explanation for having Mrs Powell's leather wallet,' he also noted.
Evidence presented at the trial also showed that 'an ugly little Nokia' cellphone was found in Fish's possession which was owned by the convicted killer.
Expert testimony from the police showed that the simcard was placed into Alida's blackberry-phone within 24 hours after the armed robbery.
Moyo also used his simcard in Alida's Nokia-C5 telephone.
The three suspects were found not guilty of attempted murder of a restaurant guest Lourens van den Berg and deliberate property damage to two vehicles. The murdered man's
brother Mike said after the verdict that 'things aren't going well with my mom (Alida). As a matter of fact I think things are getting worse with her.
It took 28 months to obtain the guilty verdict. The family is 'relieved' that the three men were found guilty.
The case continues: evidence will be reviewed to decide the prison sentences.http://www.netwerk24.com/nuus/2015-02-10-corrie-sanders-se-ma-in-trane-toe-moordenaars-skuldig-bevind-is?vc=c4c323d041009f4c626b1f29a9964366
Cornelius Johannes "Corrie" Sanders (7 January 1966 – 23 September 2012) was a South African professional boxer.
In 2003 he became the WBO heavyweight champion by defeating Wladimir Klitschko via a second-round knock out that is considered one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight boxing history and was named Ring Magazine upset of the year 2003.
He died in a hospital in the early hours of 23 September 2012] after being shot during an armed robbery
Sanders' widow Suzette Sanders said Corrie died a hero, diving to protect his daughter from oncoming bullets.[5] On Thursday, 27 September 2012, three men were arrested by North West police in the Oukasie informal settlement near Brits and charged with the murder of Sanders. At the first location, two suspects were apprehended and police recovered a cellular phone, vehicle key, purse and cash stolen during the robbery in which Sanders was shot to death. Police then went to a second address and a third suspect was arrested, and recovered a handbag stolen in the robbery.[6] The three men arrested are ages 27, 25, and 19.[7] The trial was postponed until August, 2013, as investigators attempt to locate the gun used in the crime based on the fourth suspect involved, who is currently serving a 30 year sentence in Zimbabwe for killing a police officer

Gang leader Thamsanqa Maluleka (25), who was shot by police on January 28, died in hospital on Monday this week. The gang was responsible for a spate of housebreakings in the Scottburgh area and the murder in December 2014 of Middelburg holiday-maker Vincent Enslin (32), a former Middelburg rugby player, and the most recent Pennington house robbery. Police Captain Vincent Pandarum, said the death of Maluleka brought the number of gang members killed to two.
“The other two gang members are in police custody,” he added. @IOL

Two diferent versions of same murder:
1) Linda Heyns, who writes that she is his aunt, writes that Amanzimtoti murder victim Vincent Enslin "was not stabbed in his sleep, he put up a fight and still screamed for help to my brother, Hendrik Heyns which was tied up in the other room."
everythibng in this report is just so wrong, he died of a stomach wound and did not slipped off his bed!!!I dont even want to go any further, facts are important when reporting. The car they "found" was my brother's and the killers fled with it but swerved out for security rushing to the scene. They ran when the car bumped against a tree and did not have time to take anything with.the Cremation date is wrong as well, aunt's email address: lindah@merqu.co.za
Version 2 by Middelburg Observer newspaper:
"Vincent Enslin 32, stabbed to death at Pennington, KZN by black knifemen while asleep in holiday-flat: the motive is murky because all the 'robbed' goods from the flat were abandoned in a car parked near the holiday flat. The police insist on archiving this as a business-robbery and murder, but nothing was 'robbed'..."24 December 2014 headline Middelburg Observer: “Gentle giant” aan Suidkus vermoor
"(Former) Middelburg rugby club player Vincent Enslin 32 was murdered this past weekend at a holiday-flat in Pennington at the KZN south coast holiday resort.
Enslin 32, his uncle Hendrik Heyns and an unidentified girlfriend were attacked at 03h00 by black knifemen in their holiday flat.
Mr Enslin bled to death after his main artery was cut through: he may still have been asleep when murdered.
His uncle Mr Heyns was stabbed in a hand and cheek. Marche Fick described on Facebook that she was tied up by the three knifemen.
She managed to get herself lose and rushed to the bedroom where Mr Enslin was - and found him dead in a large puddle of blood where he had slid off his bid.
The strange part is that after the armed attackers had looted the flat 'of everything they could get their hands on' and loaded into Enslin's car - the vehicle was found abandoned near the scene with all the loot untouched inside.
The crime was described as a 'robbery' but in fact - nothing was robbed.
Mr Enslin is remembered by his friends and family as a 'gentle giant' who was always smiling.
On Friday 2 January 2015 a commemorative service will be held at 11ham from the Corpus Christi Church in
Aerorand Middelburg for all his family and friends. He was cremated in Amanzimtoti where his mother lives.

FIRST REPORT
22 Dec 2014: Marche Fick writes from the family's holiday home in Pennington:
This morning at 3am we are awakened by 3 blacks who stabbed one of us ( a man ) with knives, stabbed another man to death, tied the remainder of us up and locked us up.
They then stole everything they could from kettles to our car.
While one guy was screaming for help and I finally managed to get myself lose and broke out, I managed to reach the other guys - and slid and fell into a blood-puddle which was leaking from the bed. The murdered man was only 32 years old. I was beaten, sick, miserable, angry and emotional.
I cannot describe my feelings after this is the second such armed robbery this year. At the last attack there were five black attackers and I was alone.
Fortunately I came off lightly after they were looting the place for three hours.
Thank you, the "New South Africa'.

What happened to murder trial of 4 local blacks arrested for murder of Italian-born Viviana Ester Maria Ponté 57, pharmacist/botanist tied up on bed, tortured, bed torched
Whatever happened to the trial of four local blacks arrested for the murder of pharmacist Viviana Ponté, 57 in Oranjeville? They were found with some of her possessions when arrested in August 2013. She was the pharmacacist who had, amongst others, registered the CAPS pharmaceuticals companies on the registers in South Africa (page grab) - the company which delivered 70 percent of all the drugs in Zimbabwe until the Reserve Bank allegedly intervened. (story at By Martin Kadzere

=============
Oranjeville is one of the safest towns in South Africa. Yet this woman was tied up on her bed, beaten up and then her bed was set alight in the small, usually crimefree village of Oranjeville, Free State South Africa.
----
Ms Ponte was an expert advisor to pharmaceutical companies and a registered botanist.
A mysterious incident occurred shortly after her murder: a white female colleague of Ms Ponté was arrested by Sasolburg police and appeared in Heilbron court, charged with removing harddrive from Ms Ponté's laptop computer: http://www.censorbugbear.org/farmitracker/reports/view/1441)
---------
four black South African men made a brief remand-appearance in Heilbron magistrate's court, said investigating officer of the Sasolburg SAPS, Karelli. They are suspected of murder, robbery and arson.
He named them as Moses Motloung (23), Johannes Mofokeng (24), Jeremiah Mnune (26) and Moleketi Motloung (21).
Beeld reported that one of the two Motloung men had made a statement to the magistrate - however this will only be published during the 'formal hearing'.
It is believed that the four South Africans also broke in that same night of the Ponté murder in Oranjeville's Kraanvoëlvlakte Primary School and stole food and money.

----
Oranjeville pharmacist and good samaritan Ms Viviana Ponté. 57, emigrated to South Africa with her parents as a six-year-old. Her father was the late Umberto Ponte of the round Ponte Building in central Johannesburg.
The divorced woman was much-loved in the tiny Free State community. She lived alone in her three-bedroom home. She was known for her 'kind heart', and often helped poor residents in a nearby squatter camp next to the Vaaldam, handing out food parcels once a month, giving art-lessons and helping the mostly elderly and single-women who lived there financially, too.
On Monday, her torched body was discovered on her burnt-out bed, where, police say, she clearly died a 'gruesome death'. From the forensic scene they could tell that she had been tied to her bed, possibly raped although they weren't certain forensically, and then set alight. She may have died of smoke inhalation: the forensic examination will have to determine her exact cause of death. Ms Ponté 's gruesome murder was discovered when one of her gardeners sought help from the police after realizing 'something was wrong' inside the house early on Monday-morning August 11 2013.She didn't as usual arrive at the house early as she usually did - and there were burn marks outside the house above the bedroom windows.
The police found her body at around 10h00am. One of the neighbours said Oranjeville 's smallholdings 'are like a safe, peaceful village. That something like this can happen in a rural village is horrific'.
Only the one main street is tarred - the smallholdings are connected with dirt roads. On Mrs Ponté 's smallholding there were ostriches and chickens scratching around.
Neighbours suspect she must have been attacked late Sunday-night. The community is close-knit, everyone knows one another.
As soon as a stranger arrives, neighbours phone each other and some will go and talk to the stranger to find out who the person is.
The neighbours questioned by the police said there were no strangers in the area on Sunday night.
The dogs - the animals know the sound of everyone's car -- did not raise any alarms. "If there are 'strange' cars in Oranjeville, they go wild,' said a neighbour woman who went inside with the police inside Mrs Ponté's house and made the discovery.
She arrived at the house at the same time the policeman did. "I walked in behind him. He opened the bedroom door, then turned back to me, saying 'perhaps it's better if I didn't go inside but rather wait outside', she said.
The house was ransacked, with many office files strewn all over the house. But only the main bedroom had been torched.
The bed and the curtains had burned, and blood-spatters could be seen amongst the soot.
The SAPS spokesman constable Peter Kareli said 'this was a gruesome murder." Possibly they had raped her, tied her hands and feet and possibly even strangled her, they don't know yet, before the bedroom was torched. While the house was strewn with office files and ransacked, from the photograph of the torched bedroom it was clear that easy-to-remove small items such as a clock, were not 'stolen'.

background on her advisory work:"StemEnhance: ASA (UK) Appeal Ruling 21 September 2009:
Professor Carr appealed the previous ASA ruling in favour of StemEnhance.
In 2009, the ASA were not as rigorous with confirming whether an individual was a credible expert.
Ms Viviane Ponte substantiated this product.
It is my contention that she either lied or is incompetent for there is simply not a single study conducted on humans that confirms the claims for this product.
- Stemenhance / J Carr / 12708 (ASC)
Ruling of the : Advertising Standards Committee
In the matter between: Prof. Johnathan Carr Complainant(s)/Appellant(s)
Stemtech Africa (Pty) Ltd Respondent
21 Sep 2009
http://www.asasa.org.za/ResultDetail.aspx?Ruling=4851
At the meeting of the Advertising Standards Committee (“the Committee”) held on Tuesday, 25 August 2009, the Committee considered an appeal against the Advertising Standards Directorate (“the Directorate”) ruling of 7 April 2009.
BACKGROUND
Professor Carr (the Appellant) lodged a consumer complaint against a Stemtech brochure promoting Stemenhance, which, inter alia, contained the claim “Stem cell enhancers are products that support the natural release of adult stem cells.”
His complaint stated “The claims made by the advertisements that stem cell enhancers are beneficial are false. There is no proven medical benefit of such a product. The claim that stem cell enhancers support stem cells is false”.
In reply the respondent submitted documentation from Ms Viviana Ponte whom they submitted was an independent expert in the matter.
In its ruling the Directorate noted that it was not an expert in this field and therefore has to rely on independent and credible experts to evaluate the substantiation and verify that the claims, as they appear in the advertising, are true. Should the Directorate be satisfied that the expert used meets the criteria of Clause 4.1 of section II, the only remaining question is whether or not the expert confirms the claims disputed.
The Directorate was satisfied that Ms Ponte met the requirements of Clause 4.1.4 of Section II of the Code.
She had previously been accepted as an independent credible expert in matters relating to the pharmacological functioning of supplements and there was no evidence before the Directorate to warrant a different approach in this matter.
Ms Ponte confirmed the veracity of the respondent’s claims.
As such the Directorate was satisfied that these claims were substantiated in terms of Clause 4.1 of Section II and accordingly could not be said to be misleading in terms of Clause 4.2.1 of Section II of the Code. The complaint was dismissed.
The complainant appealed the Directorate’s ruling and applied for condonation for the late filing of the appeal. This application for condonation was granted, and the appeal proceeded.
APPEAL HEARING
The complainant’s grounds for the appeal were that:
He, as a Professor of neurology, was better qualified to give an opinion on the qualities of the product than a pharmacist (Ms Ponte) and that no other scientific evidence, other than Ms Ponte’s opinion had been given.
The Directorate erred in finding that Ms Ponte was suitably qualified.
The Directorate erred in failing to advise the complainant that he was entitled to provide other expert evidence in support of his claim.
At the appeal hearing the following parties were present
• Professor J Carr – Complainant/Appellant UK
• L Vryenhoek – Respondent
• V Ponte – External Expert
• A Hoff – Observer
• G Schimmel – Observer

Survives: Karen Nothnagel, 46, shot in back: family car strafed with bullets during car-chase by black gunmen
Survives: Karen Nothnagel shot in back: family car strafed with bullets during car-chase in Bothasig, Cape Town
February 11 2015 Cape Town - Afrikaner resident Karen Nothnagel says there are moments in your life where you think: “This is it, I’m going to die.” Her moment occurred when she was chasing away from a pair of hijackers as they opened fire on her during a car chase in Bothasig.
The vehicle was riddled with bullets, the windows were shattered, and Nothnagel was hit in the back.
“I could feel the blood rushing over my hand,” she said. “I just remember my husband trying to help me steer the car and I was not sure if I was going to make it or not.”
It’s been three days since the harrowing chase, but Nothnagel, 46, said on Tuesday that it was difficult to find the words to describe their nightmare.
Two men had picked her and her husband Gean, 44, out as easy targets on Saturday night.
The Nothnagels were driving from Table View towards Bothasig at about 9.45pm. On Plattekloof Road they were travelling along the bridge which arches over the N7 when they stopped at a set of red lights.
The narrow road was quiet, with only a single car in front of them.
That’s when a man “appeared out of nowhere”, jumping onto their car bonnet. He started smashing the windscreen.
Then there was a thud on the driver’s side of the car. “I was driving and I looked over. There was this guy just smashing the window.”
Without thinking Nothnagel floored the accelerator. The old Toyota Corolla lurched forwards as she aimed for a gap between the stationary car and the pavement.
“People ask why I did this and why I did that, I don’t know, it just happened. It was instinct.”
As the Nothnagel couple’s car roared forward towards the Bothasig circle, she spotted the hijackers behind her. They were now driving a car, leaning out of the windows and firing at the Toyota.
The Richwood couple were lying as low as they could, hoping to dodge a fatal shot. The road ahead of them was beginning to widen, an island forming in the middle.
Struggling to steer, Nothnagel felt the impact as the front wheel of the car connected with concrete. Then she felt burning along her side. She didn’t know it then, but one of the bullets had hit her.
“My husband was holding on to the steering wheel, directing us towards the circle.”
Nothnagel’s first thought was to make it to the police station, but the hijackers, guessing their intention, skidded to try to block off the circle’s exit.
“I drove on to Plattekloof Road. I think they must have given up.”
When Nothnagel arrived at the police station she said officers rushed to help her. Within 10 minutes paramedics had arrived and Nothnagel was transferred to Tygerberg Hospital.
The bullet, which had travelled through her body, narrowly missed her vital organs and was halted just below her shoulder blade, will not be removed.
“The doctors told me it could cause more harm if they took it out.”
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk confirmed they were investigating a case of attempted murder and hijacking.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant LR Kemp on 021 558 3688.”

Survives: United States country singer Greg Ray shot in only remaining leg: refused ambulance service because he's white and has no insurance
Survives shooting: US country-singer Greg Ray refused ambulance service: no insurance. Carletonville, South Africa
http://www.netwerk24.com/nuus/2015-02-12-vsa-sanger-met-1-been-in-sa-geskiet
South African country singer Sandy Lee, who frequently performs with the US-born country singer Greg Ray, said 'what happened to one of our singers is horrid, a disgrace and inhumane.
He was attacked in the early-morning hours at his home (in Carletonville) while the Eskom power was off. It was dark.
The thugs shot him in his only remaining leg: Greg only has one leg after he lost the other one in a car accident in 2010 back home.
Police arrived but - because Greg doesn't have medical insurance he could not get treated by ambulance personnel.
------------------------
(*note by editor: under the rules of the Johannesburg Ambulance service, run by the State, they will take blacks who were injured and have no medical insurance, but they refuse to take whites to hospital. This policy has resulted in deaths while relatives desperately tried to find paramedics willing to take injured or critically ill white people to hospital).
------------------------------
His wife Lavergne took him to the Carletonville state hospital where he lay, bleeding for hours, without any kind of medical attention.
Lavergne then loaded him in his car and took him to Potchefstroom hospital.
Meanwhile I called the emergency department and them he's on his way and they agreed to treat him at once.
It is a screaming disgrace that he and his wife were forced for hours to seek medical help to get a bullet removed from his leg. Without any medication against the pain.
What about HIS human rights. Or doesn't he have the right to medical care and just has to lay and wait like an injured animal and wait for lead-poisoning to start.
Excuse me but animals get more humanitarian treatment than this. A disgrace for the 'new' South Africa,' she wrote on her facebook page.

Lourens Erasmus, 64, Feb 11 2015: Mr Erasmus, owner of the Mantus gardening services, was climbing into his bakkie
on Tuesday-morning to go the a client in Parktown Estate, said his daughter Denise. He and his worker were working in this garden when
a black man came running around the bend in The Grove Street to hijack his bakkie. That same man reportedly also tried to hijack a BMW in Morgan Street earlier that morning,
according to the police: but was unable to drive the vehicle. He abandoned it and ran off with the police in hot pursuit. When the suspect saw Mr Erasmus next to the road
working on the garden, he fired a shot towards him which hit his bakkie. Erasmus fired back when the man didn't lower his gun but kept shooting at him. Erasmus fired shots towards the hijacker with his licensed handgun.
"My dad was hit four times, it's unclear if the suspect was injured, said the daughter. He was rushed to the General Hospital above Parktown and underwent emergency surgery.
He was put into the theatre at 10h45 and died at 00h06 Wednesday-morning, the heartbroken daughter said.
She was looking forward to her dad walking her to the altar at her wedding in a few months and now he's gone,' she said.
The doctors said they were trying everything they could to help but his injuries were just 'too serious'. I called my mom from the hospital.
We are all broken. " Just after Lourens Erasmus was shot, he called his daughter and said: "Babatjie ek is geskiet'... and those were his last words to her.
Denise said her dad was a joyful, loving man who spread joy all around him. He loved hunting and gardening.
He earned additional income above his small pension with gardening, she said. "People just started approaching him themselves when they saw his skills and the business just developed from there."
The police are investigating murder and attempted hijacking. Despite the fact that the police reportedly had been 'on his heels' after the attempted hijacking of the BMW, no-one was arrested.
