White farm-land invaded by EFF members in Ballito along N2

EFF land invasion at Ballito “Jan van Riebeeck took this land from our people.” The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) invaded Green Fields farm, outside Ballito, today, demanding that the land be given to them. “We are here to claim back the land that Jan van Riebeeck took from our people through the barrel of a gun,” said EFF provincial member, land affairs, Tobias Mthiyane. A group of about 20 people gathered on a hill overlooking the highway and said they were not willing to negotiate because Jan van Riebeeck did not negotiate when he took the land from the African people. They claimed the land invasion was part of the organisation’s national programme that was launched on April 6, in accordance with one of the EFF’s cardinal pillars of expropriating land without compensation. Mthiyane said they would stay on the land until served with a court interdict to leave. Shortly before sunset, representatives of the land owners agreed to approach the court for an interdict rather then force the EFF to leave immediately. They are continuing to build and the police are not intervening - merely recording the fact that families are moving in . This is done so that under the law, the squatters will be allowed to remain after they have lived in their shacks for 48 hours. The white farm-families who farm on the property will then be responsible for laying on municipal services to the black squatter community at their own costs. The white farmer whose farm was targetted on Sunday is going to court on Monday to get an interdiction against the squatters. However this will be too late to remove the present squatters from the land by law.
